ABEOKUTA — A collision on the Iyana Egbado section of the Abeokuta‑Lagos Expressway in Ogun State left five people dead and 10 others injured on Thursday.
The accident involved a white Mazda E2000 bus, registration KRD 809 XC, which was carrying 20 passengers when it crashed at approximately 11:12 a.m.
According to Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Sector Command, the passengers consisted of six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child and two female children.
Odunsi reported that the crash claimed the lives of one adult male, two adult females, one male child and one female child. Ten passengers sustained injuries of varying severity, while five were unharmed.
He added that the incident was reported at 11:15 a.m. and FRSC rescue operatives from RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene at 11:20 a.m., a response time of five minutes.
Odunsi said the probable causes were excessive speeding and overloading. The road was paved and the weather was cloudy at the time of the crash.
Injured victims were transported to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and cautioned motorists against speeding, overloading and other traffic violations, especially during the festive period. He urged drivers to obey traffic regulations at all times, emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility.
