A fatal road collision on the Nkalagu section of the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway in Ebonyi State left five people dead and injured 12 others.

Daniel Asanya, the Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident and said it involved a single commercial bus.

Asanya explained that the crash occurred at Edema Bridge in Nkalagu, Ishielu Local Government Area, when a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Abakaliki to Enugu collided.

The vehicle, registered RSH 231 XE, was carrying 17 passengers: 12 males, four females and one female child.

Five occupants—four male passengers and the child—were killed, while the remaining 12 passengers suffered injuries of varying severity.

He blamed excessive speed for the accident and noted that items recovered from the scene included three mobile phones, personal belongings in two sack bags, and a quarter bag of rice.

Injured passengers were transported to Annunciation Hospital in Emene, Enugu State, for treatment, while the deceased were taken to a morgue.

Asanya urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially on sections of the Enugu–Abakaliki Highway that are under construction or maintenance.

He also called on the construction company responsible for the road project to install adequate warning and reflective signs to alert drivers to ongoing work and improve road safety.
