In the early hours of Saturday, a three‑storey building under construction collapsed in the Gudu district of Abuja, killing at least five people and leaving 16 others trapped. Emergency teams are still sifting through the wreckage in search of additional survivors.
The structure, situated behind Gudu Market near Gaduwa Estate in the Durumi 3 area, fell around 3:30 am. Most of the people trapped were labourers working on the site.
Sixteen individuals were rescued from the rubble. Eleven were transported alive to the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, Asokoro District Hospital and Maitama Hospital for treatment, while five did not survive.
Responders from the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service and the FCT Police Command were on scene, assisted by health workers and local volunteers. Residents gathered around the cordoned area, watching the rescue efforts.
FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who visited the site, stated that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had ordered that all casualties receive free medical care.
FEMD Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, confirmed the casualty figures in a Saturday morning press release, noting that search and rescue operations were ongoing and that responders were working urgently to reach anyone still trapped beneath the collapsed building.
