Fire destroys residential building in Kwara.

A residential building on Tewo‑Gbore Street, Ogele Ori‑Sunbare, in the Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State, was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.

The blaze affected a room‑and‑parlour self‑contained apartment and a two‑bedroom flat, beginning at approximately 12:38 a.m.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, said firefighters were dispatched immediately after a distress call was received from the area.

He added that the prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring structures and limited the overall damage.

Adekunle explained that preliminary investigations identified the cause as improperly extinguished charcoal stored near the building. “Sacks of charcoal had just been unloaded, and part of the charcoal was not completely extinguished. When exposed to air, the residual heat reignited and worsened the situation, resulting in the fire spreading to the building,” he said.

Alabi Muhammed, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, urged charcoal dealers, transporters and residents to handle and store combustible materials carefully. He warned against keeping such materials close to residential buildings and called on residents to stay alert and report fires promptly to emergency responders.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive emergency response and public safety education across the state.
