Super Eagles retain 26th spot after June international window
By Adegboyega Adeleye

The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, have kept their 26th place in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday. The ranking update followed a productive June international window under head coach Eric Chelle.

Despite a mixed set of results, the three‑time African champions remain the third‑highest ranked team on the continent. Their record during the window included wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, a draw with Poland, and a narrow loss to Portugal.

The Eagles performed strongly at the Unity Cup in London, defeating Zimbabwe 2‑0 before beating Jamaica 3‑0 to win the invitational tournament. They then drew 2‑2 away to Poland and lost 2‑1 to Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday night.

Although the defeat came at the hands of the UEFA Nations League champions, the Super Eagles’ position in the global rankings was preserved, underscoring the consistency they have shown since Chelle took charge.

The updated rankings offer further confidence to Chelle and his squad as they prepare for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and other international fixtures.

Morocco remains Africa’s highest‑ranked nation and is seventh in the world, while Senegal holds second place on the continent. Algeria and Egypt complete Africa’s top five.

At the top of the world rankings, reigning world champions Argentina reclaimed first place ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentine side moved back to the summit after recent victories over Honduras and Iceland.

Spain occupies second place, France third after a mixed international window, and England and Portugal complete the top five.

FIFA is expected to publish its next men’s world rankings on July 20, shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
