The Chairperson of the Niger State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bolanle Jibogun, has voiced alarm over the growing number of child‑abuse cases in the state, urging parents to be more vigilant about their children’s safety and well‑being.

Jibogun made the remarks shortly after FIDA marked Children’s Day 2026 by celebrating with children who have special needs at the Farid Centre in Minna.

She explained that the group had chosen to hold the event with children with special needs before the official Children’s Day because this year’s celebration coincides with the Sallah festivities.

“We came to show that every child is important and deserves equal love, care and protection regardless of their condition,” she said.

Jibogun noted that while FIDA typically visits government‑run facilities, the organisation decided to celebrate at the privately‑run Farid Centre to make the children feel loved and included.

However, the FIDA chairperson condemned the rising incidence of child abuse, pointing out that many incidents are committed by people familiar to the victims.

“Parents must always know where their children are because most abuses happen at home and are committed by people the children know. Such cases should be reported, and people should not be afraid to speak up,” she added.

During the event, the proprietor and co‑founder of Farid Centre, Amina Jumai Gimba, described the visit as a joyful and encouraging moment for the children. She said they felt energized, empowered and loved by the presence of guests who joined them to celebrate Children’s Day and the upcoming Sallah festivities.

Gimba urged parents not to view children with special needs as burdens but as gifts from God who deserve love, care and support to develop their talents. She added that her passion for caring for such children comes from a naturally compassionate heart and not because she has a child with special needs.

Also speaking, Dr. Nuhu Mohammed Hassana Maiyaki, an Investigation Officer with the National Human Rights Commission and the State Coordinator, said the commission has maintained a working relationship with Farid Centre and FIDA in promoting the rights of women and children.

She condemned persistent abuse against children, describing them as vulnerable members of society who cannot defend themselves. “Children need guidance and protection from parents, society and government. Harming children is against the law. Every child has the right to health, shelter and education,” she stated.

Ulmulkatum Mohammed, Director General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting children against all forms of rights violations. She assured that the agency remains ready at all times to defend the rights of children and ensure justice wherever abuse occurs, while expressing delight at celebrating the day with the children at the centre.
