The FCT Police Command has commenced a major enforcement operation against vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass, covered number plates, and improper registration, citing their increasing use in criminal activities across Abuja.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the FCT Police Command Headquarters, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said intelligence reports revealed that criminal elements frequently exploit such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and facilitate crimes, including the notorious “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other offences.
CP Sanusi described the trend as a serious threat to public safety and emphasised the need for decisive action to curb its growing impact within the Federal Capital Territory.
He emphasised that the ongoing enforcement exercise is aimed at denying criminals the anonymity they exploit while ensuring that law-abiding citizens who have legitimately obtained approval for tinted vehicles are not unduly inconvenienced.
“As part of this ongoing enforcement, over thirty vehicles found operating with tinted glass, covered or obscured number plates, and without proper registration have been impounded”, he said.
The CP added that the owners and operators of the affected vehicles would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023
Sanusi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies aimed at safeguarding residents of the nation’s capital.
He appealed to members of the public to support the initiative and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as the operation continues.
CP Sanusi also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency communication channels
The enforcement campaign forms part of broader efforts by the FCT Police Command to enhance security and reduce crime within Abuja and its surrounding communities.
