The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) has announced that its official 8% World Cup ticket allocation for its three group-stage matches in the United States was abruptly revoked, days ahead of the tournament.

The FFIRI released a statement calling the revocation discriminatory and contrary to the principles of equality governing international sports, suggesting it is tied to non-sporting and political factors.

“This is despite ‌the fact that many Iranian football fans, relying on the officially announced process, had already made the necessary plans to attend the matches,” the FFIRI added in a statement.

“Depriving Iranian ‌supporters of access to their lawful and official allocation of tickets is an action contrary to ‌the spirit governing international competitions and the principle of equality among participating countries.

“This development raises serious questions about the interference of non-sporting and political considerations in the organisation of the world’s biggest football event.”

The sudden withdrawal leaves thousands of Iranian fans—who had already purchased tickets and arranged travel and accommodation—unable to attend their matches.

While the governing body has yet to issue a formal ruling on the ticket dispute, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom noted that the organization is communicating with the FFIRI to ensure the delegation’s tournament experience remains as positive as possible.
