Nigeria’s ambassador‑designate to South Africa, Femi Fani‑Kayode, has called on critics to “bury their heads in shame” after false allegations were made against former Zamfara State governor Abdullaziz Yari.

Video clips claiming that Yari was involved in gold smuggling have recently spread across social media.

The claims come in the wake of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) seizure of 22.2 kilograms of gold, valued at ₦4.4 billion, at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Fani‑Kayode condemned the videos, accusing those who produced them of attempting to bring down a “good man.”

On X, he wrote: “The assertion that my friend and brother Senator Abdul Aziz Yari, the Marafan Sokoto, had any connection with the gold that was intercepted at Kano airport is pure falsehood.”

He added, “Worse still it is asinine and nonsensical. There is nothing new in trying to pull a good man down and it rarely works.”

“Nothing can change a man’s destiny or prevent him from achieving God’s purpose for his life. Those that are behind this fake news are vicious and malicious: they should bury their heads in shame.”
