The Nigerian Institute of Building, Abia State chapter, has reiterated its call for tighter enforcement of professional standards and building regulations after two buildings collapsed in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State.

The structures, which were nearly finished, fell on New Jerusalem Road 8 and Eze Iheme Road, near Ama Uchenna Mgboko, Umuette Okpulo Umuobo, in Osisioma Ngwa LGA. Fortunately, no lives were lost in either collapse.

After inspecting the sites on Saturday, members of the Institute urged stronger measures to prevent future structural failures.

Wisdom Okore, Chairman of the Institute’s Practice Committee, said the repeated incidents of building collapse across the country are a serious concern that demands coordinated action from government, regulatory bodies and construction professionals.

He added that ongoing capacity building—through regular workshops, training programmes and professional development—would reinforce compliance with established standards and improve the quality of building production processes.

Okore noted that registered professional builders are legally required to oversee and manage building projects from conception to completion in accordance with recognised professional standards and regulatory requirements.

He also urged the Abia State Government to strengthen the enforcement of the National Building Code and the Abia State Physical Planning and Development Regulations, arguing that effective implementation of these provisions would reduce structural failures.

Okore expressed relief that no lives were lost, calling the outcome fortunate while sympathising with those whose properties were affected.

Mr Chinedu Nwanosike, Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Abia State Chapter, also spoke, calling on all professionals in the building industry to uphold ethical standards and follow approved construction procedures.
