The European Union has voiced concern about the recent executions in Jordan and Kuwait, reaffirming its absolute opposition to the death penalty in every situation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the EU referred to the June 21 execution of six people in Jordan and noted that the country had maintained a de facto moratorium on executions and capital punishment since 2017.

The EU stated that the death penalty breaches the right to life and cannot be imposed without infringing the right to be free from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Brussels added that capital punishment has not been proven to deter crime and makes any judicial error irreversible.

The alliance urged Jordan to reinstate a moratorium on all executions as an initial step toward complete abolition.

Concerning the recent execution of five individuals in Kuwait, the EU expressed continued concern over the rising use of capital punishment in the country during the past two years.

The bloc maintained that the death penalty is cruel and inhumane, incompatible with the inalienable right to life, and constitutes an unacceptable denial of fundamental life and human dignity.

The 27‑member bloc affirmed its ongoing commitment to abolishing the death penalty in the few remaining countries that still enforce it.
