Enugu North by-election marred by late arrival of materials

The Enugu North Senatorial District by‑election held on Saturday was disrupted at several polling stations by delays in the arrival of electoral materials and a shortage of election staff.

In Amube Wards 1 and 2 of the Ohom Orba Community, Udenu Local Government Area, voter accreditation had not begun by 10:45 a.m. because the necessary materials had only reached the collation centre shortly before that time.

All Progressives Congress (APC) agent for Amube Ward 2, Mr. Christopher Ugwuowo, told reporters that the delay was caused by late distribution of materials from the collation centre and logistical problems involving election officials.

Ugwuowo explained that officials and party agents had to wait at the collation centre in Okpu Orba until the materials were finally dispatched to the affected polling units.

“When we got to the collation centre at Okpu Orba, we discovered that the materials arrived late. The electoral workers were also not efficient enough to move immediately, while the absence of some corps members further contributed to the delay,” he said.

The situation left many voters standing at the polling stations and raised concerns about the smooth conduct of the by‑election in those areas.

Election observers and other stakeholders have called on electoral authorities to resolve the logistical shortcomings so that eligible voters are not disenfranchised.
