Emmanuel Fernandez: Why Arsenal move isn’t the best for Rangers centre-back

Very few young defenders have seen their value rise as quickly as Emmanuel Fernandez’s during the 2025/26 season, reports Afrik Foot.

The Rangers centre‑back has become one of the most promising defenders in Scottish football, attracting interest from several European clubs, including Arsenal, a destination that would naturally appeal to any ambitious young player.

Arsenal are one of Europe’s elite clubs, have challenged for major honours since Mikel Arteta took over, are UEFA Champions League regulars, and compete in the English top‑flight.

However, while a move to North London might look attractive on paper, it may not be the best career decision for Fernandez at this stage.

Breakthrough season at Rangers

Fernandez has enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Rangers, often looking like a seasoned professional despite still being early in his senior career.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with scouts from several Premier League clubs tracking his progress.

The 24‑year‑old was voted Rangers’ Men’s Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season and was named in the PFA Scotland Scottish Premiership Team of the Year.

He also debuted for the Super Eagles against Iran back in March, before scoring on his full start against Jordan.

Emmanuel Fernandez’s response to Arsenal

Working under Mikel Arteta would be an attractive offer to any player, considering their recent rise. The Spanish coach has transformed Arsenal into one of Europe’s best sides.

They recently won the English Premier League, and narrowly missed out on the UEFA Champions League title to Paris Saint‑Germain.

However, playing time remains the most important factor for young players, which is where the move begins to look less appealing.

Arsenal already have the best defence in Europe. At centre‑back alone, Fernandez would find himself competing against William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, arguably one of the best centre‑back pairings in world football.

Behind them, Arsenal also have options, including Jurrien Timber, Ben White, Ricardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapie.

Breaking into that group would be extremely difficult. Even if Fernandez were signed, he would spend much of his time on the bench, playing occasional cup games or being sent out on loan.

For a player whose development has accelerated through consistent first‑team football at Rangers, the move represents a significant setback.

The two‑cap Nigerian defender isn’t ignorant of Arsenal’s interest either, although he played down the possibility of a deal happening.

“Look, I don’t really read into stuff like that. I’m just focused on the job that I’m doing here. If there’s noise going on, I’m happy for the noise,” Fernandez said in quotes revealed by the Scotsman.

“It’s a great achievement, I guess, or something that you can look to knowing that you’re doing well.”

“But I feel like for me, right now, I’m focused on taking it game by game and winning the title and bringing it back for this club.”

“I love it here [Rangers]. I see myself being here. I’ve still got four years left on my contract, whether that’s to run down my contract.”

“I’m happy I’m here. I’m happy to carry on being here,” the former Peterborough man concluded.

The jump from Scottish football to becoming a regular starter for Arsenal is enormous.

However, the best step to maturing for Fernandez is to play every week, refining his game, and gaining experience in big games like the Old Firm derby.

Whether that means remaining at Rangers for another season or joining a club where he is guaranteed a starting role, that remains his best option to becoming a starter for big clubs when the offer comes knocking.
