Electricity: TCN Records 276 Tower Vandalism Incidents in Three Years

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that it has recorded 276 instances of vandalised infrastructure between 2022 and 2025 across the country.

Speaking at a public sensitisation event on the ills of vandalism of TCN infrastructure held in Itori, Ewekoro, Ogun State, Engr. Adeshina Adeonipekun, General Manager of TCN Lagos region, said: “I can recall as of last year, 2025, from 2022, we recorded nothing less than 276 tower vandalism. This year, with the support of communities and proactiveness of our staff, we have been able to minimise the issue of vandalism to about 40.”

He added that TCN has implemented several measures, including an annual sensitisation programme at various locations, to curb vandalism. The programme allows the company to collaborate with host communities to safeguard its infrastructure. Adeonipekun noted that the Southwest region has relatively few incidents and that the National Security Adviser and security agencies have helped apprehend culprits.

TCN’s Principal Manager of Lines for the Lagos region, Engr. Kuye Emmanuel, also highlighted protective measures for transmission lines. “Apart from this awareness, we arrange private vigilantes from zone to zone within the community that are being paid monthly to safeguard our lines. We also provide incentives to farmers in the community as a way of giving back to them and also appeal to them to stand firm and report vandals lurking around the area,” he said.

HRM Abdul Fatai Akorede Akamo, the Olu of Itori, remarked that the last awareness session in Itori took place four years ago. He praised TCN’s efforts and urged that such events be held at least once a year.

Mrs. Balogun Olushola, Deputy Superintendent of Corps of the Nigerian Civil Defence, called on community members to desist from aiding and abetting criminal activities and to report suspicious activity around TCN towers.
