Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano, said that former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai is facing stringent bail conditions before he can be released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El‑Rufai has been held by the ICPC since February 19.

On April 13, the ICPC presented the former governor to a Kaduna high court with a revised set of nine charges alleging fraud and misuse of office.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, the Emir explained that officials had requested the involvement of an emir and a senior government official to guarantee El‑Rufai’s release.

He added: “For example, take a look at what’s going on with my brother, Mallam Nasir el‑Rufai, who is currently in custody and the conditions for his release are very tough. They said that both an emir and a high‑ranking government official need to sign his bail.”
