Ekiti Police Command has detained 11 individuals suspected of being political thugs hired to interfere with the All Progressives Congress House of Representatives primary in the state.
Commissioner of Police Falade Micheal announced the arrests during a press conference in Ado‑Ekiti on Friday.
He said the police had positioned tactical and intelligence teams throughout the state in preparation for the APC House of Representatives primary, originally set for May 15.
The deployment aims to guarantee a peaceful, credible, and smooth election process.
The commissioner reported that around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, the police received reliable intelligence that a group of suspected hoodlums, armed with dangerous weapons, had been spotted at Onikoyi Hotel in Ikun‑Ekiti.
Rapid Response Squad operatives were dispatched to the hotel, resulting in the arrest of seven suspects; the remaining individuals fled in approximately three vehicles.
The suspects arrested at the hotel were identified as Adekunle Stephen, Adepoju Adebayo, Boluwaji Ishola, Oluwatobi Adeoluwa, Akintunde Emmanuel, Adewale Makanjuola and Ibitola Babatope.
The commissioner said the seized items included two pump‑action guns, a Beretta pistol, nine rounds of 9mm live ammunition, four live cartridges, substances suspected to be charms, two Apple laptops, and a Honda Accord.
Further police operations intercepted an unregistered Toyota Sienna bus carrying four additional suspects who had previously escaped from the hotel.
The additional suspects were identified as Abanikanda Sikiru, Dayo Ibijowo, Ajayi Dele and Adegbite Damola.
A pump‑action gun was also recovered from the bus.
Falade stated that, during interrogation, the suspects admitted to being political thugs employed by a serving member of the House of Representatives to destabilise the APC primary.
He added that the suspects would face court charges once the investigation concludes and that police are continuing to pursue other escapees and their alleged sponsor.
The commissioner urged residents to remain law‑abiding and avoid actions that could threaten peace during the election period.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to working with other security agencies to preserve peace throughout the state. (NAN)
