John Chigozie Ekeogu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Imo State chapter following the party’s state, local government area, and ward congresses held throughout the state.
Other officials elected alongside him include Paul Alaba as Secretary; Chidubem Achonwa Amaobichukwu as Organising Secretary; Ngozi Amajuonyi as Woman Leader; Kenneth Nwahiri as Youth Leader; and Tobias Okoronkwo as Legal Adviser, among others.
After the congress, Amobi Achonwa, Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the exercise complied with the SDP constitution and was intended to strengthen party cohesion.
He added that the proceedings were conducted peacefully and that all elected officials emerged through a democratic process.
“Prior to the elections, delegates and aspirants were painstakingly accredited and screened, with an INEC official present to witness the congress,” he said.
“The party adopted a consensus arrangement unanimously agreed upon by members,” he added.
In his address, the newly elected chairman, Ekeogu, pledged to work with the other executive members to secure a political victory for the SDP in the 2027 elections.
He praised the party for conducting a credible exercise, stating that the SDP is poised for success, and urged members to remain loyal to the party and avoid anti‑party activities.
