EFCC probes self-styled prophet accused of defrauding church members of N70.3m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun an investigation into Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, who is known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, after allegations that he swindled his ministry members out of N70.39 million.

The anti-graft agency announced the probe on its official X account on Wednesday, stating that operatives of its Enugu Zonal Directorate were examining several petitions filed against the cleric.

According to the EFCC, Ajuluchukwucheya allegedly collected money from church members through a range of schemes, including promises of spiritual interventions and investment opportunities.

One petitioner, Okey Uwakwe, claimed that the prophet took N6.23 million from him for spiritual works aimed at persuading his brother—who had been living abroad since 1997—to return to Nigeria.

Uwakwe also said he paid N3.25 million to the cleric to carry out spiritual exercises intended to help his childless sister‑in‑law conceive after more than 15 years without a child.

The EFCC further alleged that the suspect told ministry members he had won a N33 billion lottery and urged them to invest money with the promise of dividends from the supposed winnings.

In the same vein, Uwakwe contributed an additional N3.35 million to the scheme and paid another N500,000 toward a rice‑processing business that the cleric claimed was worth N1 billion.

Uwakwe said he had paid a total of N13.33 million to the suspect without receiving any benefit.

The anti‑graft agency noted that several other ministry members later came forward with similar complaints during the course of the investigation.

Some of the complainants alleged that the suspect sold items described as “holy ghost thunder,” “miracle stickers,” and “spiritual dragons,” promising prosperity and solutions to personal challenges.

Quoting one alleged victim, the EFCC said, “He asked me to do what they tagged ‘holy ghost thunder,’ believing it was going to solve my problems. I bought it, and after all the payments, nothing happened, and my problems still persisted.”

The commission stated that preliminary findings indicate the total amount allegedly collected from ministry members amounts to N70.39 million.

The EFCC added that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged in court once the inquiry concludes.
