A suspect in a cybercrime investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was killed during a gunfight between security forces and alleged cult members in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
The deceased, identified as Atser Sesugh, was one of three individuals apprehended by the EFCC on 28 April 2026 on charges of internet fraud and related offences.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said that James Onuh, Atser Sesugh and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena had escaped from EFCC custody on 4 May and went into hiding.
According to the police spokesperson, intelligence led officers to a hideout behind Mechanic Village in Kanshio around 3 p.m. on Thursday, after receiving reports that the fugitives had been seen in the area.
Edet explained that the officers were fired upon by suspected cultists, sparking a gun exchange before the attackers fled.
The statement added that as the officers withdrew, Sesugh was found lying critically injured on the roadside.
“He was immediately rushed to the Police Cottage Hospital, Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead,” the statement read.
The police image maker further said that the body has been taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
Edet also noted that the Benue State Commissioner of Police has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances of the incident, while efforts continue to locate the remaining fugitives.
