Ecuador President Daniel Noboa declared Friday a national holiday after the national team, La Tri, defeated Germany 2–1.

The victory secured Ecuador’s place in the knockout round as one of the eight best third‑placed teams.

It is only the second time the South American side has reached the World Cup knockout stage, matching the achievement from the 2006 tournament in Germany.

Ecuador Rallied to Beat Germany

Sebastian Beccacece’s squad, which had earned only one point from its first two matches, fell behind after just two minutes when Leroy Sane converted a pass from Florian Wirtz.

Ecuador responded seven minutes later when Nilson Angulo calmly slipped past Manuel Neuer after a through‑ball from Pablo Vite.

Thirteen minutes from the end, Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal, sealing a memorable victory.

Noboa Celebrates Historic Victory

In a post on X, Noboa praised the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism and adversity to secure the historic win.

“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults and the difficult moments they endured, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow is a holiday! Long live Ecuador!”
