Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece expressed disappointment after his side lost 1‑0 to Ivory Coast in their World Cup opening match early this morning.

Beccacece said he had made all the necessary changes in the second half to keep the game level, but a 90th‑minute goal by Amad Diallo, who came on as a substitute, gave the West Africans the win.

“In the second half we made the necessary adjustments and were in control enough to secure at least a draw,” Beccacece told reporters after the match.

“We put in a tremendous effort against a strong opponent. The final result wasn’t what we wanted, but it’s just the beginning, and we have to keep working.”

Ecuador will next face Curaçao in Group E, while Ivory Coast will play Germany.
