A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Tehran, Iran’s capital, late on Tuesday.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at 11:46 p.m. local time (2016 GMT).

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB said the tremor originated east of the city in the Pardis region, at an estimated depth of about 10 kilometres.

IRIB added that no immediate reports of damage or injuries had been received.

The tremor was also felt in Karaj, a suburb located roughly 40 kilometres west of Tehran.

According to DAILY POST, Iran ranks among the world’s most seismically active nations, situated at the complex junction of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Frequent high‑magnitude quakes, often with shallow epicenters, have historically produced substantial casualties and damage because of vulnerable infrastructure.

Notable historic events include the 1990 Rudbar‑Tarom earthquake, magnitude 7.4, which claimed over 40,000 lives, and the 2003 Bam earthquake, magnitude 6.6.

The Bam quake alone resulted in more than 26,000 deaths and widespread devastation.
