A Professor of Political Science, Jibrin Ibrahim, expressed disappointment that contemporary Nigerian politics diverges from the concepts taught in academic settings.
Prof. Ibrahim made the remarks on Tuesday during a question‑and‑answer session on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ program.
He also stated that political parties had become vehicles for delivering power to individuals.
According to him: “As someone who studied political science, it is deeply depressing to see politics now operating on a completely different set of principles not found in the literature we were taught.
“We grew up believing that democracy followed certain rules and standards, only to discover that much of what happens in reality has little connection to the theories and ideals we studied.
“My own personal tragedy is that I read political science that’s fairly classic, and we just assumed that, if you are talking of democratic politics, these are the rules.”
