On Wednesday, May 20 2026, the Nigerian naira exhibited a mixed performance against the U.S. dollar across both the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) and the parallel market, as demand for foreign exchange remained strong.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the naira closed at ₦1,373.65 per dollar in the official NFEM window, a slight depreciation of 15 kobo from the previous session’s rate of ₦1,373.50.

In the parallel market—often referred to as the black market—the dollar traded at roughly ₦1,390 for purchases and ₦1,400 for sales in major hubs such as Lagos and Abuja.

Market observers noted that the spread between the official and parallel rates stayed comparatively narrow, suggesting that monetary authorities are actively working to stabilise the foreign exchange market and enhance liquidity.

Analysts linked the recent naira movements to persistent demand pressure from importers and businesses, even as the Central Bank has been intervening to increase dollar supply within the formal market.

The NFEM remains Nigeria’s official foreign exchange venue, where rates are set through market trading under the supervision of the Central Bank.
