Silence will kill democracy – CUPP

ABUJA – Peter Ameh, the Acting National Chairman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), urged Nigerians to oppose what he described as “hostile executive rascality and brazen judicial overreach” in the recent deregistration of political parties.

Ameh issued the statement in Abuja on Tuesday, recalling the 2019 deregistration of parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a move that was later upheld by the courts.

‘We should have stood together’

He noted that six years ago, opposition parties had resisted the undemocratic deregistration, with figures such as Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) standing firm.

“Had we remained united and collectively resisted, we would have significantly weakened the systematic plot to deregister political parties that deserve the chance to grow organically,” Ameh said.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” he added, quoting philosopher Edmund Burke.

Ameh warned that deregistering parties, regardless of size, sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy and must not be allowed to stand.

“This hostile executive rascality and brazen judicial overreach must not be allowed to stand,” he declared.
