Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo‑Hashim has called a Federal High Court ruling that deregistered five political parties—including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Accord Party—a deliberate scheme to weaken the opposition in advance of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Olawepo‑Hashim warned that the order threatens Nigeria’s multi‑party democracy.

He said the judgment confirms concerns he has voiced since 2024 about a coordinated effort to diminish opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to the Kwara‑born politician, recent political developments show attempts to curb competition by eroding opposition parties and their structures.

He noted that opposition governors are being pressured to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while internal disputes and leadership crises have further weakened opposition parties.

Olawepo‑Hashim also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of enforcing an electoral timetable he claims contradicts the Electoral Act of 2026, and said the commission has not made necessary adjustments amid ongoing legal challenges.

“This judgment is a major setback for opposition politics and democratic participation. Nigeria’s democracy is built on multi‑party participation,” he said. “I urge stakeholders to protect democratic institutions and ensure electoral integrity.”

He called on political parties, civil society organisations, pro‑democracy groups, and citizens to stay actively engaged in defending democratic processes and strengthening the country’s electoral system.
