Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, has urged the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to cancel the contract for the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project. He cited the contractor’s alleged poor performance and ongoing delays as reasons for the request.
A letter signed by Senator Barau was received at the Federal Ministry of Works on 8 June 2026 and was later released to DAILY POST. In the letter, the lawmaker expressed grave concerns about the pace of work by CGC Nigeria Limited, the firm contracted to complete the multi‑billion‑naira project.
The Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project aims to upgrade about 100 kilometres of single carriageway into a dual carriageway. The upgrade is intended to improve transportation and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from rural communities to markets in neighbouring states.
Senator Barau noted that, despite substantial government funding, progress on the road has been unsatisfactory, causing hardship for residents, commuters and businesses that rely on the corridor. He pointed out that the project received N19 billion under the 2025 Appropriation Act and an additional N37 billion in the 2026 budget, yet significant milestones have reportedly not been achieved.
Describing the road as strategically important to the socio‑economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi states, the Deputy Senate President called on the Ministry of Works to conduct an immediate assessment of the contractor’s performance. He further recommended that the contract be revoked if the contractor is found unable to meet the expected project obligations, arguing that such action would serve the public interest and help ensure timely completion of the critical infrastructure.
