Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State urged Nigerians to take an active role in the democratic process and to adopt values that foster national unity, tolerance and development.

The call came in a Democracy Day message released on Thursday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Muhammad, in commemoration of the June 12 celebration.

Namadi described the occasion as a chance to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and on the duties of both leaders and citizens in sustaining democratic governance.

He said that democracy can only thrive when citizens stay engaged, informed and committed to the common good, adding that nation‑building is a collective responsibility that goes beyond the government.

“Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, informed and committed to the common good. Nation‑building is not the responsibility of government alone,” he said. “It requires the contributions of every citizen through lawful conduct, hard work, patriotism and respect for our shared values.”

The governor urged Nigerians to continue embracing tolerance, civic responsibility and respect for differing opinions, noting that these values are essential for strengthening democratic institutions and fostering peaceful coexistence.

He described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s history, saying it symbolizes the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for justice, freedom and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.

According to Namadi, democracy extends beyond elections to include the strengthening of institutions, adherence to the rule of law, protection of citizens’ rights and accountability in governance.

While acknowledging the challenges Nigeria has faced in its democratic journey, the governor expressed optimism about the country’s future, crediting its strength to the resilience, diversity and determination of its people.

The governor also praised traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups and security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and social harmony in Jigawa State.

Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people‑centred governance and urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at promoting development, unity and democratic growth.

He also voiced support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the need for collaboration among all levels of government to address national challenges and improve citizens’ welfare.

The governor prayed for continued peace, unity and prosperity in Jigawa State and Nigeria, urging citizens to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic ideals and national progress.
