Delta forestry personnel suspected of drowning in abandoned well during chase

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that a personnel of the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service and a second individual died after falling into an abandoned open well at an unfinished building site.

The incident occurred on Thursday along Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku road, in Aniocha South Local Government Area, during a joint patrol by police officers and forestry personnel.

Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe, said the joint team, while on routine duty, “saw two men later identified as Adama Augustine and another individual.”

“When the men were spotted, they fled, prompting a chase by the forest officers who were part of the patrol. As they approached, Adama Augustine leapt into an unfinished building. One of the forest officers continued the pursuit, but both Adama Augustine and the officer fell into an abandoned open well within the building site and drowned.”

Both were rescued and taken to Ogwashi General Hospital, where they were declared dead by the attending doctor. Their bodies remain in the hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

“This is a very painful and tragic accident. The Command expresses deep condolences to the family of Mr. Eze Ifeanyi, his colleagues in the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service, and the family of the late Adama Augustine,” Edafe added.

“We mourn with all those affected by this calamity. We want to make it very clear that no shooting took place. Nobody was killed by the police.”

“An investigation has already commenced. The Command reassures the people of Ogwashi-Uku and Delta State of its commitment to the safety of all residents and urges everyone to remain calm and disregard rumours.”
