On Thursday, Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara was disrupted when medical consultants affiliated with the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) began an indefinite strike in protest of their chairman's dismissal and what they described as government indifference to their demands.
The strike has halted all clinical services, residency training, and academic programmes, leaving patients without care and suspending medical training throughout the hospital.
After an emergency congress, the MDCAN DELSUTH chapter released a statement saying the strike was prompted by what it called the “victimisation” of its chairman and the government's failure to honour prior agreements with the association.
Signed by Vice-Chairman Dr. Enemuwe Ibobo Mike and Secretary Dr. Nwajei Ifeanyichukwu Anita, the statement explained that the dismissal had been reviewed and found to conflict with earlier understandings with authorities, making the strike unavoidable.
