A Lagos State Miscellaneous Court sentenced 279 individuals, including five women, to varying prison terms. The arrests occurred over the weekend after a raid on areas known for criminal activity.

The operation was conducted by officers of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA). The detainees were described as hoodlums, thieves, drug users, and other miscreants who operate under bridges, in markets, and in parks.

Prince Ifalade Oyekan, the General Manager of the Safety Agency, said most of the arrested had no fixed address and posed a threat to Lagos residents. He added that the agency will work with the police and other security bodies to eliminate the nuisance.

Oyekan noted that many of those apprehended were caught in the Lekki area, where they had been known to attack motorists at night and seize their property with guns.

“Lagos will no longer tolerate their activities. We have to protect our people. The majority of them are from the North who have come to Lagos for the first time. They believe that once they get here, they will survive,” Oyekan said.
