The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has denied claims that an inmate at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, was robbed of personal valuables worth more than N120 million during a routine search.
Service Public Relations Officer Jane Osuji issued a statement in Abuja on Friday, calling the allegation “false, misleading and inconsistent with the operational realities and established procedures governing custodial facilities in the country.”
Osuji explained that the activity at the Kuje facility was a standard security search conducted in accordance with the Service’s operating procedures, which are designed to maintain security, order and discipline. All prohibited items found were processed and documented.
The Service reiterated that its regulations forbid inmates from keeping unauthorized items or large sums of money while in custody. Personal belongings declared by inmates at admission are recorded and stored securely until discharge or lawful release.
Importantly, the NCoS noted that records from the custodial centre show the items mentioned in media reports were never declared by the inmate upon admission and were not found or recorded during the search. “There is no official record supporting the allegation that the said prohibited valuables were in the custody of the inmate(s) within the facility,” Osuji said.
The Service added that the items alleged to have been taken are classified as prohibited contraband, meaning no inmate may retain them in personal possession. Unauthorized introduction or possession of such items constitutes a breach of custodial regulations.
As of the time of the report, no formal or informal complaint of theft or loss had been lodged by the affected inmate, another inmate, or any person at the centre through official channels.
“The Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, is calm, peaceful and secure,” Osuji declared.
The Service urged the public and media organisations to refrain from circulating sensational and unverified claims that could undermine confidence in institutions, and encouraged journalists to seek clarification through official channels to ensure accuracy and responsible reporting.
