Cooking gas imports jump by 1400% as prices reduce in Nigeria

Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, otherwise known as cooking gas, imported into Nigeria jumped sharply by 1,400 percent to 1.5 kilotonnes per day in June 2026.

This is according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Fact Sheet for June released on Friday.

The report showed that Nigeria’s daily consumption of LPG rose by 24 percent in June to 5.1 KT/d from 4.1 KT/d recorded the previous Monday.

NMDPRA’s data indicated that of the 5.1 KT/d daily LPG consumption in June, domestic production stood at 3.6 KT/d, while imports were 1.5 KT/d.

This means that in the period under review, LPG imports rose sharply to address cooking gas scarcity.

Recall that the LPG price surged to over N2,000 per kilogram from around N900 and N1,200 before settling between N1,500 and N1,700 per kilogram depending on the location in Nigeria.
