The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu
Lt Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, called on officers, soldiers, civilian personnel, veterans and their families to stay steadfast in their pledge to defend Nigeria.
He delivered this message to the army community during Friday’s Juma’at prayers, an event that forms part of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
He framed the anniversary as a chance to thank God, reflect on the army’s history, celebrate its accomplishments, honour fallen heroes, and renew the commitment to national defence.
He noted that for 163 years the Nigerian army has stood as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to national service.
He added that the army has continued to adapt to evolving security challenges while staying focused on its constitutional duty to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The COAS highlighted that the 2026 NADCEL theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army”, underscores the army’s commitment to the safety, prosperity, and trust of Nigerians.
“Our troops remain actively engaged in operations aimed at combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other criminal activities threatening the peace and stability of our nation.”
