Getafe could be forced into making several difficult financial decisions if Super Eagles star Christantus Uche decides to stay at the Spanish club, Afrik-Foot reports.

A standout performer in La Liga last year, Uche is not lacking in admirers with the 23-year-old Nigerian attracting attention from Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Everton and Brentford. While Real Betis are believed to be leading the race with a proposed €15 million offer, Real Sociedad have also made enquiries about signing him on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Everton and Brentford are also believes to be working on taking Uche back to the Premier League despite his difficult time at Crystal Palace. Everton see Uche as an affordable player with plenty of room to improve, while Brentford believe his strength, pace and athletic style would suit the intensity of English football.

Although Uche endured a frustrating loan spell under manager Oliver Glasner, struggling for regular playing time, his reputation in Spain remains strong. Crystal Palace eventually decided not to activate their €20 million permanent purchase clause, allowing the midfielder to return to Getafe.

Club president Ángel Torres has already admitted that Getafe are willing to listen to offers worth around €15 million as they try to improve the club’s financial position ahead of the new season.

However, head coach José Bordalás, who has extended his contract, has insisted that Uche remains an important member of his squad despite the transfer speculation.

Speaking about the Nigerian international, Bordalás said:

“Regarding Uche, I don’t like to single anyone out because it often gets personalized, and there are feelings and family involved, and he’s a very important player, just like the rest of his teammates.

“Right now, he’s a Getafe player. With the same enthusiasm as his teammates, I’m sure he’ll join us with all the excitement in the world, and at this moment he’s a Getafe player and we’re obviously counting on him.”

Bordalás led Getafe to secure a seventh-place finish in La Liga during the just-concluded season, earning qualification for the 2026-27 UEFA Conference League. Their 1-0 victory over Osasuna on the final day ended a six-year absence from European football and booked the club’s first-ever appearance in the Conference League.

Getafe’s emergency plan if Uche stays

Keeping Uche may strengthen Getafe on the pitch, but it could create major financial problems behind the scenes.

Following Crystal Palace’s decision not to complete his permanent transfer, Getafe suffered a major financial setback. A court ruling in favour of La Liga also removed temporary financial relief previously enjoyed by the club, leading to a dramatic reduction of their squad salary limit from €51.9 million to €34.8 million.

If Uche remains at the club and no major transfer fee is received, Getafe will have to find other ways to close an estimated €17 million gap while preparing for the demands of domestic and European football.

One possible solution would be selling other important players. Experienced striker Borja Mayoral, the club’s highest earner, could be sacrificed to reduce the wage bill. Goalkeeper David Soria may also become available because of his market value and sizeable salary.

La Liga’s financial rules would also limit the club’s spending. Since Getafe are operating above their salary limit, they cannot freely reinvest transfer income. Under the league’s financial regulations, only about half of the money saved through player sales or wage reductions can be used to register new signings.

As a result, sporting director Toni Muñoz may have to rely heavily on free agents, season-long loan deals from bigger clubs such as Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, and talented academy graduates to strengthen the squad without increasing costs.

European football could also provide some financial relief. Getafe will enter the UEFA Conference League play-off round directly, where they will play two legs on August 20 and August 27. Victory would send them into the league phase running from October to December, bringing valuable UEFA prize money, television revenue and increased matchday income.

If Uche stays despite interest from Real Betis and other clubs, Bordalás is expected to build his team around the Nigerian midfielder. The coach sees Uche’s physical strength, versatility and work rate as key qualities that could help Getafe compete in both La Liga and Europe while potentially increasing his market value even further before the 2027 transfer windows.
