Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as coach on four-year deal

Chelsea announced on Sunday that Xabi Alonso will take charge of the club as manager on a four‑year contract, marking the latest effort to reverse the team’s recent decline.

The Blues were defeated by Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday and currently sit ninth in the Premier League, with two matches remaining in the season.

Alonso gained recognition as one of Europe’s most promising coaches after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten German league and cup double during the 2023/24 campaign.

He spent only seven months as manager of Real Madrid, having been appointed in 2025 and leaving the Spanish club in January.

“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager of the men’s team,” the club said in a statement.

“The Spaniard will begin his role on 1 July 2026, having agreed a four‑year contract at Stamford Bridge.”

Alonso now faces the challenge of restoring Chelsea to contention for major trophies.

Following their loss at Wembley, the club has endured eight consecutive seasons without a domestic title, despite significant investment in the transfer market.
