Chelsea reach agreement to appoint Alonso as new manager – Report

Chelsea Football Club has reportedly reached a comprehensive agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager.

Sources from The Athletic say that Alonso has accepted the role after visiting London earlier this month, following the departure of Liam Rosenoir.

The report indicates that a four‑year contract is being finalised, with an official announcement expected shortly.

Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was also in consideration for the position before Chelsea moved closer to confirming Alonso’s appointment.

Alonso, 44, has been without a coaching role since leaving Real Madrid in January, having terminated a three‑year contract less than a year into it.

Prior to his stint at Madrid, he guided Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, completing the domestic campaign unbeaten.

As a player, Alonso spent five years in the Premier League with Liverpool F.C., winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005.

Chelsea ended its association with Rosenoir in April after a run of poor results that included five consecutive Premier League defeats.
