Chelle Warns of Tough Challenge Ahead of Super Eagles vs. Reggae Boyz in Unity Cup Final

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, stated that his side is ready to defend the Unity Cup trophy in today’s final in London, regardless of the conditions on the day.

The Super Eagles and the Reggae Boyz both secured 2‑0 victories in their semi‑finals against Zimbabwe and India, respectively, and will meet for the third time in the Afro‑Caribbean mini‑tournament that celebrates football, music and culture in the British capital.

In last year’s final, Moses Simon gave Nigeria an early lead, which the Reggae Boyz answered almost immediately through Kaheim Dixon. Early in the second half, Nigeria regained the advantage at Brentford Stadium via Samuel Chukwueze, but the Boyz levelled again through Jon Russell.

The three‑time African champions converted all five of their penalty kicks, while Dwayne Atkinson missed his attempt over goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s sticks. Although Simon and Chukwueze are absent from this year’s tournament, Nigeria displayed class with a largely new squad on Tuesday, outclassing Zimbabwe’s Warriors with a brace from debutant Femi Azeez. The following day, Kaheim Dixon scored the Boyz’s second goal against India, after Courtney Clarke had put them ahead.

When asked whether his team is prepared to face another penalty shootout – having won last year’s tournament through that route and having experienced the lottery in the semi‑final and third‑place match at the previous Africa Cup of Nations finals – Chelle replied: “Penalties are part of the game, and they can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win.”

“This is the culture I have instilled in these boys – the winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s match will end in penalties; what I do know is that I have prepared my team to win. These are very young players with a bright future, and they are hungry for success at any level. So, on Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we have certainly prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”
