Celtic Manager Uncertain About Iheanacho’s Future

Celtic interim head coach Martin O’Neill has expressed uncertainty about the future of Kelechi Iheanacho, offering little insight into whether the Super Eagles striker will stay beyond the current campaign.

O’Neill said he could not guarantee Iheanacho’s future because his own position at the club remains unsettled.

The Nigeria international signed a one‑year contract with the Hoops last summer, with the club holding an option to extend it for an additional year.

“Iheanacho keeps asking me! ‘What do you think, are they going to keep me on?’” O’Neill told the Scotsman after the Scottish Cup final.

“I have no idea, mate. Don’t ask me, I am not the manager anymore. This morning again, he stopped me in the lift. ‘Are you staying on?’ I have no idea, can you just concentrate on the game this afternoon.”

The 29‑year‑old has become a fan favourite at Celtic, scoring several crucial goals for the Hoops and playing a key role in their league title and Scottish Cup triumphs.

Iheanacho registered nine goals in 24 appearances across all competitions for the club in the 2025/26 season.

The striker has made it clear that he wants to remain at Celtic beyond the current season.

“I love the supporters, I love them all,” Iheanacho was quoted by Herald Scotland.

“Everyone in the streets of Glasgow, people recognise me. I am happy. The whole of Glasgow is a great city. Hopefully, I will be here next season. I am really happy to wear a Celtic shirt and to play for them with all my heart.”
