Celtic manager gives a harsh assessment of Kelechi Iheanacho’s future.

Celtic interim head coach Martin O’Neill has given Kelechi Iheanacho a harsh reply to his wish to remain with the club beyond the current season, according to Afrik Foot.

The 29‑year‑old joined the Scottish champions last summer as a free agent after terminating the remainder of his three‑year contract with Sevilla, having spent only six months in Spain.

Iheanacho had a promising start to his time in Scotland, but injuries curtailed his playing time and he lost his place in the starting XI.

Nevertheless, he earned a cult‑hero status at Celtic, scoring vital goals from the bench to help secure the league title and, most recently, to win the FA Cup against Dunfermline Athletic.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s hope of a Celtic stay and Martin O’Neill’s response

Despite limited minutes, the former Manchester City striker played a key role in Celtic’s domestic double and has expressed a desire to stay beyond this season.

“I love the supporters, I love them all,” Kelechi Iheanacho said, as reported by the Herald Scotland.

“Everyone in the streets of Glasgow, people recognise me. I am happy. The whole of Glasgow is a great city.”

“Hopefully, I will be here next season. I am really happy to wear a Celtic shirt and to play for them with all my heart.”

Meanwhile, interim boss Martin O’Neill is preparing to discuss the club’s future with principal shareholder Dermot Desmond, but has made clear that a permanent coaching role would be difficult to secure.

Given the uncertainty, the 74‑year‑old told the Scotsman that he cannot guarantee Iheanacho a place in the squad for next season.

“Iheanacho keeps asking me! ‘What do you think, are they going to keep me on?’” the former Nottingham Forest coach said.

“I have no idea, mate. Don’t ask me, I am not the manager anymore. This morning again he stopped me in the lift. ‘Are you staying on?’ I have no idea, can you just concentrate on the game this afternoon!”

Iheanacho signed a one‑year contract with Celtic, with the club holding an option to extend for a second year. Whether that option will be exercised remains unknown.
