Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye appears to have moved into pole position in the race to become Nigeria’s undisputed first‑choice goalkeeper, Afrik‑Foot reports.

The Udinese shot‑stopper is enjoying arguably the best period of his career while his number‑one competition Stanley Nwabali battles uncertainty over his club future.

The goalkeeping debate has been a major issue around the Super Eagles since the end of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Nwabali was Nigeria’s hero during the 2023 AFCON run to the final and also featured prominently as the team secured bronze at the 2025 edition, but recent developments have changed the landscape.

Under head coach Eric Chelle, Okoye has increasingly become the preferred option. The former Watford goalkeeper started Nigeria’s recent international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The former Watford man delivered convincing performances and strengthened his case ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Super Eagles goalkeeper: Okoye in control

Few Nigerian players have experienced a turnaround as dramatic as Okoye’s over the past few seasons. After falling down the pecking order following criticism that followed the 2021 AFCON, the goalkeeper rebuilt his reputation in Italy.

During the 2025/26 Serie A season, he established himself as Udinese’s first‑choice goalkeeper, making 30 league appearances and keeping 10 clean sheets. He remains the only Nigerian shot‑stopper playing regularly for a club in Europe’s top five leagues. The last Super Eagles goalie to hold that distinction was the legendary Vincent Enyeama at Lille.

Often included in the conversations when weekly and monthly awards are up for grabs in the Italian top flight, it is no surprise that Okoye entered the summer with growing interest from bigger clubs. More importantly for Nigeria, he was playing every week against some of the strongest attackers in world football.

That sharpness was evident during the June international window. Okoye completed the full 90 minutes in matches against Poland and Portugal, produced key saves and showed the confidence expected of a goalkeeper trusted to lead the defence.

Combined with his recent displays, playing regular football at Serie A level has provided Chelle and his technical crew a strong argument for making Okoye the team’s first choice heading into crucial AFCON qualifiers.

Super Eagles No.1: Why Nwabali faces an uphill battle

While Okoye’s stock has continued to rise, Nwabali’s situation has become increasingly complicated.

The goalkeeper left South African side Chippa United by mutual agreement in early 2026, a decision that surprised many within Nigerian football circles. Since then, he has spent months without competitive club football.

The lack of match action ultimately cost him a place in Nigeria’s squad for the summer friendly window. Long periods without competitive games can be particularly damaging for a goalkeeper, regardless of individual training programmes.

Nwabali’s inactivity comes at a difficult time because Nigeria are preparing for another AFCON qualification cycle. Even if he secures a move during the current transfer window, he would still need time to settle into a new environment, adapt to a different defensive system and regain full match rhythm.

Recent performances have also worked against him. After earning widespread praise during AFCON campaigns, the former Enyimba goalkeeper came under scrutiny following errors in some World Cup qualifying matches. Those moments encouraged the coaching staff to reassess the position and look at alternatives.

Francis Uzoho remains available as an experienced option, while Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is emerging as another serious contender after completing his international switch to Nigeria.

However, the numbers and circumstances strongly favour Okoye at the moment. He is playing regularly at a high level, has earned the confidence of the coaching staff and has delivered when given opportunities in national colours.

Unless injury, loss of form or a remarkable comeback from Nwabali changes the equation, the Super Eagles’ number‑one gloves appear to be Maduka Okoye’s to lose as Nigeria begin preparations for the road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
