South Africa head coach Hugo Broos expressed disappointment following the team’s 1‑0 defeat to Canada in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both teams were making their debut in the knockout stage. The match seemed poised for extra time until Eustaquio scored a clinical strike just outside the penalty area, ending South Africa’s hopes.

After the match, Broos said Bafana Bafana fell short of the power, speed, and one‑on‑one quality required in modern football, yet praised the historic run.

Although the stoppage‑time loss was heartbreaking, Broos highlighted the tournament positively, noting that fans could be proud of South Africa’s first appearance in the knockout rounds in 24 years.

“First of all, it’s clever to make decisions when you are disappointed. On the other side, I think we lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team.”

“We lost a lot of duels, man against man, and the speed in our team, not only running speed but also the speed of execution.”

“Football is more than techniques; it sometimes requires power and speed. And when you don’t have it in your team and you play against a team that has it, then it’s an issue. That was the big quality of the team.”

“We had a difficult game, but on the other side, when you look at it, we can be satisfied with what we did because it was 24 years ago South Africa could qualify for the World Cup.”

Canada, playing in Los Angeles as a co‑host, failed to win their group and will now meet either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 in the last‑16, marking the end of South Africa’s World Cup campaign.
