Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, known as Professor Kola Oyewo, a veteran actor and scholar, has died at the age of 80, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment and academic circles.
The announcement of his death was made on Friday by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, who posted a tribute on Facebook. In his message, Adetoyese described his father as a man whose life was defined by “love, wisdom, strength and kindness,” and expressed profound sorrow at the loss.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father,” he wrote. He added that, while the family mourns, they are grateful for the life Professor Oyewo lived and the impact he had on countless people.
Adetoyese said the actor’s legacy will live on through the memories of family, friends, colleagues and admirers who were touched by his work. He also called for prayers and support for the family during this period of mourning, noting that they are celebrating a life devoted to service, learning and the arts.
Professor Oyewo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost figures in theatre and performing arts. Over several decades, he contributed significantly to the development and preservation of Yoruba theatre and promoted Nigerian culture through his performances on stage, screen and in the classroom.
His career encompassed acting, teaching and cultural advocacy, establishing him as a prominent voice in the growth of theatre arts in Nigeria.
