On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Alkali Yarima, alias La’ari, a member of Boko Haram, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 Maiduguri attacks.
Judge James Omotosho, in his ruling, imposed a life sentence on Yarima for count six, which involved training in arms and weapon handling in preparation for terrorist acts.
Yarima received a 35‑year sentence for count one and a 30‑year term for count five.
He was also given 10‑year sentences for each of counts two, three and four.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the federal government filed a seven‑count charge against Yarima, designated FHC/KNJ/CR/971/2026.
The charge was dated May 26 and filed on May 29 by Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Director of Public Prosecutions for the Federation.
Count one, carrying a 35‑year sentence, alleged that Yarima, identified by chest number 1636 in the Lawanti area of Mafa local government, Borno, had professed and maintained membership in Boko Haram between 2009 and 2015, the period leading up to his arrest.
He was accused of accepting “Da’wah” from Mohammed Yusuf, the founder of Boko Haram.
This offence is punishable under Section 16(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act, 2013.
In count six, for which he received a life sentence, the prosecution alleged that Yarima had engaged in conduct preparing for terrorist acts by traveling to an Arab country for arms and weapons training.
This offence is punishable under Section 21 of the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act, 2013.
