Benin Oba Calls on Local Doctors Amid Rising Insecurity

The Ewuare II of Benin has called together native doctors, traditional priests and priestesses for an emergency meeting to address the escalating insecurity in Edo State and other parts of the country.

The call was issued in a statement released on Friday and signed by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor.

According to the statement, the meeting will take place at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.

The palace noted that the gathering was convened at the direction of Oba Ewuare II and should be regarded as an urgent matter.

It added that the purpose of the meeting is to explore traditional methods that could complement ongoing government efforts to tackle insecurity.

In addition, the Benin Traditional Council announced plans to meet with youth leaders, known as Okaighele, on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at the same venue and time.

This development underscores the growing role of traditional institutions in supporting security agencies amid rising incidents of kidnapping and cult‑related violence in the state.
