Benfica announced on Thursday that Real Madrid would need to pay 15 million euros to acquire coach Jose Mourinho.
Club president Florentino Perez has stated his intention to bring Mourinho back to the Bernabéu, 13 years after the former manager left in 2013, as he campaigns for re‑election this weekend.
In a statement, Benfica said that Perez had communicated his “firm intention to recruit” Mourinho and that the Portuguese club’s release clause was set at 15 million euros (approximately $17.4 million).
Earlier reports had suggested the fee could be as low as three million euros.
Mourinho appeared in a video on Perez’s Instagram account, confirming his readiness to return to the club he first joined in 2010.
During his first spell, he secured a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup.
Re‑appointing the polarising figure would be a risk for Perez, given that Los Blancos finished the previous season without a major trophy for the second year running.
However, Perez believes Mourinho can restore discipline to a dressing room that has reportedly become dominated by player influence.
Mourinho joined Benfica in September 2025 and guided the team to an unbeaten league campaign, although they finished third. He has one year remaining on his contract.
