Manuel Neuer, the long‑time goalkeeper of Bayern Munich, confirmed on Friday that he has signed a one‑year extension with the German champions, keeping him at the club until 2027.
The 40‑year‑old’s contract was due to expire in the summer, but he will now spend a 16th season with the Bavarian side.
“It was a clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” Neuer said. “All the conditions are met here: with this team we can beat any opponent.”
Regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers ever, Neuer finished third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or voting, the most recent time a goalkeeper ranked in the top three.
According to German tabloid Bild, he is expected to play fewer matches in the 2026‑27 campaign to aid the transition to backup keeper Jonas Urbig.
Bayern also extended the contract of third‑string goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another season.
Neuer, a 2014 World Cup winner with Germany, retired from international football in 2024 after earning 124 caps for the four‑time world champions.
The veteran was praised for his performance in the first leg of Bayern’s Champions League quarter‑final win over Real Madrid, where he earned the UEFA Man of the Match award.
Since joining Bayern from his boyhood club Schalke in 2011, Neuer has enjoyed a highly successful career. He has won two Champions League titles and a record 13 Bundesliga championships—tied for most with teammate Thomas Müller.
Only twice has he missed a league title since arriving: in 2011‑12, his debut season, and in 2023‑24.
Neuer has also lifted the German Cup six times, five with Bayern and once with Schalke.
