Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has dispatched 2,187 newly trained members of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Forest Security Services (BSVFSS) to enhance security monitoring and safeguard the state’s forest reserves and natural resources.
The deployment followed a graduation ceremony on Saturday at the Police Training School in Yelwa, during which the governor—represented by Deputy Governor Mohammed Auwal Jatau—officially authorized the operatives to begin their duties in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
Mohammed stated that the initiative highlights his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the preservation of forest resources, and the enhancement of security throughout communities.
He added that the state’s forests are vital for agriculture, economic development, biodiversity conservation, and the livelihoods of many residents, yet they face growing threats from illegal logging, poaching, and indiscriminate exploitation.
“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to peacebuilding. It symbolizes integrity and discipline.”
“I urge you to act as good ambassadors and strictly observe the rules of engagement in all your operations to achieve the objectives of establishing the Forest Guard Corps,” he said.
He noted that forested areas have become hideouts for criminal elements, necessitating stronger measures to secure them.
The governor explained that recruiting the 2,187 forest guards was intended not only to protect natural resources but also to create employment opportunities for young people in the state.
He expressed confidence that the recruits’ training had prepared them for the task ahead, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.
Mohammed reminded the personnel that they are expected to serve as protectors of the environment and defenders of the state’s natural assets, warning that acts of indiscipline, abuse of office, or collaboration with criminal elements would attract sanctions.
Speaking at the event, State Commissioner of Police CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu—represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Musa M. Bulus—stated that the newly trained operatives would be expected to uphold high standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties.
He urged them to remain disciplined, respect citizens’ rights, and contribute meaningfully to the protection of lives and property.
