Barcelona confirmed the acquisition of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United on Friday, with a transfer fee that could rise to 80 million euros ($93 million).
The club announced that Gordon will sign a contract that runs for five seasons, ending on 30 June 2031.
The 25‑year‑old left winger scored 17 goals for Newcastle this season, including 10 in the Champions League, and finished as the club’s top scorer.
“As a kid, to play for Barcelona is the biggest dream possible, it’s the biggest club on the planet,” Gordon said to reporters.
“I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but like I said, I’m ready for this kind of challenge, ready for that responsibility.”
“I know everybody, the players in the past who’ve worn the shirt, it holds a lot of weight, but I’m ready. I’m excited for the challenge.”
Gordon, who was part of England’s World Cup squad, strengthens Barcelona’s attack after the departure of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract and the possible return of Marcus Rashford following his loan spell at Manchester United.
La Liga champions Barcelona are still looking to add further firepower in the coming weeks, with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez linked to a move to Catalonia, and the club has not ruled out a new signing to keep Rashford.
After three years of restrained spending and the reopening of a partially rebuilt Camp Nou stadium, Barca now have more financial flexibility within La Liga’s strict financial fair play rules than in the past.
Lewandowski’s exit and the end of Rashford’s loan give Barcelona room to spend, while other players such as Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati and Marc‑Andre ter Stegen may also leave.
Gordon’s transfer is Newcastle’s second‑largest sale in club history, after Liverpool paid £125 million ($168 million) for Alexander Isak last summer.
The Premier League side may look to Real Betis winger Ez Abde as a replacement, according to reports.
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in 2023, with the Merseyside club set to receive 15 percent of the profit from the winger’s departure from St James’s Park.
