Bandits attack Plateau community, killing eight and injuring dozens

Eight people were confirmed killed and more than 15 were injured when suspected Fulani bandits attacked the Gwon‑Ajang village in Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

Joseph Azi, a resident who spoke with DAILY POST on Monday morning, said the attackers—estimated at over 100 and heavily armed—stormed the village around 10 p.m. and fired sporadically, forcing residents who had already gone to bed to flee for safety.

“The Fulani terrorists invaded Gwon‑Ajang village of Foron District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area at about 10 p.m. on Sunday,” Azi told the paper.

“They were more than 100 and heavily armed. The people had already retired to their beds when the bandits invaded the village. Immediately they entered the village, they started shooting while shouting “Allahu Akbar” and speaking the Fulani language all through. They operated for over two hours while the people made frantic calls to security agencies but they did not come to their rescue. By the time the terrorists left, eight people were killed while over 15 others sustained injuries,” he added.

Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder‑Association (BYM), also confirmed the incident. He said he was still collecting details and would release a full statement once the facts and figures were verified.

Attempts to obtain comments from SP Alfred Alabo, the state police spokesman, and Captain Polycarp Oteh, Media Information Officer of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to their phones went unanswered.
